The ambient ionization methods have changed the way samples are analyzed by mass spectrometry. These techniques are frequently said to require “no sample preparation” but it would be more correct to say that these methods frequently require no additional sample preparation since the sample processing takes place during the analysis, proximal and in real time with ionization.
